The History Of The Shoe

The oldest known leather shoe, about 5500 years old.

In the very earliest days the simplest way to protect the foot was to use whatever was handy. Large leaves, bark, and grass were tied under the foot and secured with vines. In hotter countries this eventually developed into the sandal made from woven grass, plant fibres or palms and were attached to the foot with toe loops and straps. Very early examples of sandals have been found in America, Polynesia and Japan.

Early man also used the skins of animals for clothing and footwear and in colder climates skins gave more protection and kept the feet warm. Very early versions of moccasins have been found where a piece of skin was punched round the edge with holes and threaded with a leather strap. Very few early shoes have survived but fragments of Bronze Age footwear have been found, but not enough to be able to determine what sort of style. From the Roman times onwards many more shoes have survived and show us that there were many more shoe styles available than you might expect.

The Romans produced a wide variety of footwear. When they arrived in Britain they would have been wearing the military sandal called the caliga, this sandal had an open toe and a latticed upper which laced at the front. There were other styles such as the gallica and calceus which both had closed toes and were much more suited to the cold wet British weather. After the Romans new styles of footwear began to appear, usually a closed oval or round toed style. In the 9th century the ankle shoe became popular, this was a shoe made from two parts the upper and the sole, and they were usually made for either foot.

During the Medieval period shoe styles continued to change, the upper and sole were now stitched together and the toe developed into a sharp point. As the length of one’s shoes was linked to status they got longer and longer and in the 1320’s were known as crackowes, pikes or poulaines. Only men wore these long shoes, women usually wore the ankle shoe laced at the side.

At the end of the middle ages the pointed shoe vanished to be replaced by square and round toe shapes. Once again the toes became larger and wider and by the time of the reign of Henry VIII shoes reaching 6 ½ inches across were common!
Another style of this time was a low cut shoe with a strap and buckle fastening across the ankle, these shoes had a square toe.

The blunt toe style returned in the 1500’s followed by a round toe in the 1590’s. After 1570 shoes develop a latchet tie which fastens over a tongued front, heels start to emerge around this time. By the end of the reign of Elizabeth I heels were at 2 or 3 inches. Flamboyant knee boots were popular during the reign of Charles I.

During the 17th Century, men wore shoes with a square toe and women wore the more feminine pointed toe. The buckle fastening for shoes came about in 1660. At first buckles were only popular with men but eventually women wore them too.
In the 18th Century women's dresses were very elaborate and their shoes reflected this with embroidery and trimming. Men's shoes became quite plain made of black leather with pointed toes and low heels.

The thicker heels begin to thin down by the end of the 1760s, the top becomes wider and more wedge like producing the Italian heel. By the end of the 18th century women’s shoes became lower cut, heels flattened out to nothing and the toes become oval then square.

In the 19th Century it was boots for both men and women. The Bulcher boot with its open tab and lacing and the Balmoral boot which had a closed tab and front lacing. During this time women also wore court shoes in different materials. Men had a choice between the Oxford shoe and the Derby shoe.

Modern shoes have come in a huge variety of styles, from the 1920’s bar shoes to the 1930’s two-colour shoes, the 1940’s utility style shoes, the brothel creepers of the 1950’s and the winkle pickers of the 1960’s and platform shoes of the 1970’s.
